Terna: the 2009 Sustainability Report is online
Introduction: why invest in CSR online communication
The concept of sustainability is now a central issue for many companies which no longer pursue only the goal of profit but run their businesses focussing on social, ethical and environmental values. It is, therefore, essential to create value through sustainable services centred around environmental and social responsibility.
Aims
Terna, in particular, takes social responsibility seriously and, as every year, besides preparing the printed report puts a lot of weight on the added value that the creation of a dedicated interactive website can offer.
This year the aim was to create an interactive website with specific functions for CSR specialists, capable of offering a clear and exhaustive dialogue with stakeholders. Message was responsible for its design and development and sought to satisfy customer needs by adding new features and improvements to the web surfing experience. Features
- The homepage highlights the company’s main results by means of a clear and brief slide show. The banner explicitly lists the company’s principles and the menu below provides an overview of the issues addressed in the Sustainability Report.
- A user-friendly website: to facilitate the search for the information desired, in the bottom half of the homepage a simple menu has been created which takes the user directly to the most relevant and important issues. In particular, in the Global reporting initiatives box, it is possible to access the item Performance indicators where a particular function has been developed to link performance indicators to the portions of text to which they refer. Thus, by clicking on each indicator you obtain a kind of search engine which finds all the pages and portions of text to which the indicator corresponds. The same principle has been used for the item G3 and Global Compact: by clicking on each indicator it is easy to find the webpage with information relating to the indicator you are interested in.
- To highlight Terna’s commitment to sustainability, boxes have been created on some pages of the website called Highlights. These boxes can be clicked and make the reading of the Sustainability Report even more interactive.
- The interactive charts enable analysis of Terna’s main sustainability indicators. The data selected can be displayed in different graphic styles, can be downloaded in Excel and exported as JPEGs.
The website also includes a key-word search. Finally, an online form allows users to express their opinion and respond to a questionnaire.
