Enel, the most "open" company in Italy
Objective No. 1: transparency
For the second year in a row Enel has opted for transparency, focusing hard on the html format to make consultation of all its 2010 reports easier and more interactive. Reports include the Annual Reports, Report and Financial Statements, and Sustainability Report plus, online shortly, the Environmental Report.
Open Data
This year, however, the electricity giant has taken a big step forward by espousing the “open data” philosophy – meaning the practice of making some types of data accessible to everyone, without copyright or patent restrictions or other forms of control limiting duplication.
And this is the very setting – the first example in Italy by a private company – of the Enel Open Data website, an environment that makes all data (business, financial and sustainability data) available in 3 formats (XLS, CSV, XML and, shortly, Google Fusion Tables) that can also be linked to analytical documentation and visualization systems.
The aims of the project relate to 3 aspects, i.e.:
- Increase transparency and the involvement of all stakeholders
- Improve business – “better information makes better markets”
- Aid innovation – open data stimulate the development of new applications.
The importance of the initiative is demonstrated by the immediate debate it has unleashed in the Web and, in general, praise has been unanimous.
2010 Reports
The 2010 online reports share the same objectives – immediacy and interactivity – and hence the same basic structure.
The home pages in fact all feature strong visibility of some key items of information within the overall graphical setting:
- the decision to present some key tags within a particularly visible interactive structure makes it possible to capture web surfers’ interest as regards some “core” topics of the Financial Statements and, at the same time, direct users towards those same items of information on inner pages.
- The central flash works in the same way, pointing out the results achieved by the group. In this respect, we like to highlight the stakeholder map created for the Sustainability Report, an interactive application that presents the initiatives (the results, so to speak) of the Group vis-à-vis each category of stakeholders, presenting it like the map of a metropolitan rail network.
- While the right-hand column contains documents and links, the left-hand column provides space for the year’s most significant facts and figures, always presented in interactive format.
And the frame for all this, demonstrating that all the various reports - Annual Reports, Report and Financial Statements, and Sustainability Report - now form part of an integrated approach, is the page Enel 2010 Reports.
